Miss Party wants to suggest you inject a bit of English humor into this year’s Easter Brunch and turn it upside down –have a Mad Hatter’s Easter Brunch! You’ve got to figure the Easter Bunny and the White Rabbit are distant cousins and, of course, the March Hare probably is, too. Whether it’s just for your own family or a houseful of children and adults, they’ll all be delighted to fall down, down, down into the rabbit hole along with you!!
If you’d like to do your own simple version of a Mad Tea Party, just mismatch several sets of china, pull out those little-used teacups and saucers and a couple of teapots. Fill the teapots with pretty country-style flowers for your centerpieces and add in a few heart-themed floral picks. For the tables themselves, layer mismatching tablecloths and napkins. See “DIY Mad Tea Party Menu Card and Napkins Ties” for a few quick ideas for the table. On food and dining tables, sprinkle heart-shaped confetti and miniature playing cards (available in the doll house collectibles aisle of a craft store) or use actual size played cards. If you’re feeling ambitious, make a “Teetering Teacups” centerpiece. See “DIY Mad Tea Party “Teetering Teacups” Centerpiece” for directions and ideas.
Miss Party did a Mad Tea Party inspired Easter breakfast last spring. She used mismatched, white cafe china and a few pieces of beloved ‘Alice in Wonderland’ china she acquired online from “Urban Outfitters”. (If you’d like your own set, see “Giant ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Teacup” for a link and to see another piece they offer.) It was a such a fun way to surprise a couple of bleary-eyed teenagers who still get visits from the Easter Bunny!
If you have an old deck of cards you can spare, collect out the Hearts suit and use them as place setting cards. Write the guest’s name on the face of a card with an indelible pen. Place the card prominently in the center of their place setting. Miss Party received the most adorable set of silver teapot place card holders one year which she has used to hold playing cards.
A fun addition to the place settings is to use book quotes printed on slips of parchment paper. Miss Party loves Lewis Carroll’s non-sensical way with words! She has created two extensive lists of whimsical sayings and dubious advice given by Wonderland characters throughout ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking-Glass’ books for you to use as a reference list. See “Alice in Wonderland” Quotes, Part 1 and a continuation post on “Alice in Wonderland” Quotes, Part 2 for dozens of interesting quotes from different characters.
For a young children’s table you probably have concerns about china breakage. No worries! Create a fabulous, pretend china set of any size without breaking the bank at the toy store. Purchase white plastic plates, bowls (if necessary) white plastic teacups with saucers, and a couple of paint pens at the craft store. Draw a simple patterned border around each plate and saucer and the outer rim of each teacup. Wash and reuse for future tea parties. The little ones will be thrilled they have ‘real’ china, too!
